Labyrinth

Most individuals I see have a labyrinth, a maze of walls around their heart and their mind. I gently, with patience approach these labyrinth with the utmost respect for the purposes these walls once served in the clients life to help them navigate their past life experiences and protect their heart and mind. It takes a sense of humility and awe at what has been constructed before it can slowly, with new supports in place, be deconstructed. It takes patience and a keen ability to reflectively listen and act as a mirror for the client, to empower them to guide me through the maze protecting them. As the client heals the protective maze gets less daunting in its size and the path forward becomes clearer.

Trauma Experiencing a trauma can leave you feeling constricted in your heart space as well as cognitively restricted. Your heart starts to close itself off from others due to fear of being hurt again and also quite simply, you go into self preservation mode – fight, flight, freeze, or faun response. Your mind can become rigid in the way you view others and your life experiences, as you construct thoughts with the purpose of trying to ensure you never let that trauma happen again. You may also have a myriad of symptoms – such as sleep deprivation, anxiety, loss of motivation, depression, flashbacks, and more. I work with clients to first establish a sense of safety in the counselling - room which is the first step.

The client is reminded of what safety feels like in the context of relationships. You cannot heal unless you feel safe. Next we work together, after establishing mental and emotional resources, to start the process of EMDR, unraveling neural knots in the brain that occurred as a result of trauma.

The client slowly starts to trust again and starts to experience trauma growth – experiencing the rewards of being free from that which was constricting their heart and mind. Book a free consultation via our website Christina May Counselling. I would love to assist you on your journey forward.
